
Agentic AI is no exception. Too autonomous. Too fast. Too hard to control.
The concerns sound rational: What if an AI system makes a catastrophic error at machine speed? What if it causes more damage than the threat it’s designed to stop? What if we lose the ability to intervene before failures cascade across our infrastructure?
These fears aren’t new. They echo through the history of technology adoption with remarkable consistency. From encryption to cloud computing to automated software updates, we’ve confronted technologies that seemed too risky to implement at scale. In each case, the real risk turned out to be not adopting them. Adversaries are learning that lesson faster than defenders. This reaction is predictable and understandable. It’s also instructive about how transformative technologies eventually become normalized infrastructure.
Over the last couple of years, the industry has flooded security operations centers with AI-driven tools that promise automation but deliver administration. These tools are exceptional at ingestion and analysis. They can sift through petabytes of telemetry, correlate disparate events, and present a high-fidelity alert to a human analyst.
But that’s where they stop.
Current AI SOC solutions primarily make work. They operate as advanced triage nurses: diagnosing the patient, organizing the chart, and handing the file to a human doctor who’s already double-booked. The output is a list of recommendations, a set of query results, a confidence score. The human operator validates, decides, and manually executes the fix. When dwell times are measured in minutes, that handoff is a fatal bottleneck.
Agentic Autonomous Remediation changes this equation because it actually does the work. It bridges the gap between decision and execution. An agentic system doesn’t just suggest that a compromised endpoint be isolated; it isolates the endpoint. It doesn’t recommend that a compromised credential be rotated; it interfaces with the identity provider and rotates the key. It moves defenders from a posture of “review and approve” to “monitor and govern.”
We need this capability for survival, not just efficiency. Adversaries have already automated their attack chains. They don’t pause for human approval before moving laterally or exfiltrating data. Relying on tools that create homework for defenders means bringing a bureaucratic process to a kinetic fight. And yet the transition from homework to action triggers anxiety. Security professionals hesitate to adopt, even when the operational case is clear.
Recent media coverage, industry commentary, and security forums reflect recurring concerns about autonomous cyber defense. The objections cluster around several themes.
First, there’s the speed problem. AI systems can make mistakes at machine speed, amplifying damage across entire infrastructures before human operators can intervene. The concern isn’t just that automation makes errors, but that it makes them faster than humans can detect. A misconfigured rule or false positive could trigger cascading failures that spread through interconnected systems in milliseconds.
Second, there’s the self-inflicted denial of service risk. Overzealous remediation could quarantine critical systems, block legitimate users, or trigger automated responses that conflict with business continuity requirements. Security teams worry about automation that protects networks by making them unusable. I’ve talked to operators who watched an automated playbook lock out the entire finance department during quarter close because a single analyst’s credentials tripped a behavioral detection.
Third, there’s the incomplete context problem. Modern attacks are sophisticated and context dependent. A remediation system that lacks full situational awareness might respond to symptoms rather than root causes, creating security theater while missing the actual threat. Worse, it might misinterpret benign anomalies as attacks, generating false positives that erode trust in the system over time.
These objections aren’t irrational. They reflect legitimate concerns about delegating critical security decisions to systems that operate beyond direct human supervision. But the question to ask is whether these risks are unique to autonomous remediation, or whether we’ve confronted and resolved similar concerns before.
The objections raised against autonomous cyber remediation aren’t new arguments. We’ve seen them before. Each reflects concerns that were raised, debated, and resolved in previous technology adoption cycles. Understanding these parallels reveals a pattern: technologies that seem too risky to trust eventually become the infrastructure we cannot function without.

That was U.S. Department of Justice testimony during the Crypto Wars of the 1990s.
Law enforcement and intelligence agencies argued passionately that strong encryption would create a “going dark” problem: a world where criminals could operate with impunity behind unbreakable digital locks. The proposed solution was key escrow, requiring backdoors that would allow government access to encrypted communications under court order.
The objections were serious and sustained. Encryption would enable terrorism. It would facilitate child exploitation. It would make law enforcement impossible. It was simply too risky to deploy without government controls.
Now encryption is the foundation of global commerce, digital banking, healthcare privacy, and national infrastructure. We didn’t solve the “going dark” problem by weakening encryption. We accepted that some capabilities would be lost in exchange for a more secure digital ecosystem. Backdoored encryption would have been exploited by adversaries, creating vulnerabilities far more dangerous than the risks it was designed to mitigate.

That was the consensus in enterprise IT risk assessments around 2008–2010.
When Amazon Web Services and other cloud providers emerged, enterprise security teams recoiled. The objections were familiar: loss of control, multi-tenancy risks, data residency concerns, compliance challenges, dependence on third-party security practices. Storing customer data, financial records, or intellectual property on servers owned and operated by someone else seemed antithetical to basic security principles.
For years, cloud migration was treated as a risky experiment rather than a strategic imperative. Security teams argued that on-premises infrastructure provided better visibility, control, and auditability. Cloud platforms were seen as suitable for non-critical workloads but too unpredictable for sensitive operations.
Now cloud platforms are recognized as more governable, auditable, and secure than most enterprise data centers. The shared responsibility model clarified accountability. Infrastructure-as-code made configurations repeatable and auditable. Automated compliance monitoring reduced human error. Centralized logging provided visibility that on-premises environments struggled to match. Cloud providers didn’t eliminate risk; they created frameworks for managing it at scale.

In the early 2000s, automatic software updates were controversial. Security professionals argued that updates should be carefully tested, manually reviewed, and deployed in controlled phases. Allowing software to update itself without explicit administrator approval seemed reckless. A single compromised update could instantly affect millions of systems.
The concern wasn’t theoretical. Supply chain attacks demonstrated that trusted software channels could be compromised. If an attacker gained access to an update server, they could push malware disguised as legitimate patches, bypassing traditional defenses. Automatic updates eliminated the human checkpoint that might catch a suspicious release.
Now the greater risk is not updating automatically. Delayed patching has become the systemic vulnerability that enables most successful attacks. Ransomware operators exploit unpatched systems. Nation-state actors target organizations that lag behind security updates. The window between vulnerability disclosure and widespread exploitation has collapsed, making manual update cycles a liability rather than a safeguard. Automation didn’t eliminate supply chain risk; it made delayed patching untenable.
Each of these technologies faced legitimate risk. None succeeded by eliminating danger. They succeeded by shifting humans from operators to supervisors. With encryption, humans no longer decrypt every communication. They design cryptographic protocols, manage key hierarchies, and audit implementations. With cloud infrastructure, humans no longer provision every server. They define infrastructure as code, set policies, and review compliance reports. With software updates, humans no longer test every patch manually. They define deployment policies, monitor rollout metrics, and respond to failures.
In each case, automation didn’t replace judgment. It elevated judgment. The work shifted from execution to oversight, from tactical response to strategic design. Humans became responsible for defining the rules, monitoring the outcomes, and intervening when systems behaved unexpectedly.
Agentic cyber remediation is following the same trajectory. Humans will remain in the loop. The question is where in the loop they’ll operate.
Defenders who master supervision and governance of autonomous systems will gain advantages that manual operators can’t match. Those who insist on approving every action will find themselves outpaced by adversaries who’ve already operationalized automation.
Labeling a technology “too risky” is often the first step toward its eventual normalization. The pattern repeats because the objections are often correct, just incomplete. Yes, encryption enables criminals. Yes, cloud platforms introduce dependencies. Yes, automation can fail catastrophically. All true.
What these statements miss is the counterfactual. What happens if we don’t adopt? In every historical case, the answer turned out to be worse. Organizations that delayed encryption adoption became targets. Companies that rejected cloud infrastructure fell behind competitors. IT teams that disabled automatic updates became victims of preventable breaches.
The real danger with autonomous cyber remediation isn’t the technology itself. It’s the gap that opens when adversaries operationalize it faster than defenders. Attackers are already using autonomous tools for reconnaissance, exploitation, and lateral movement. Defenders who insist on manual response are bringing human-speed defenses to a machine-speed fight.
The technologies we fear most often become the infrastructure we can’t live without. The question isn’t whether to adopt agentic autonomous remediation. It’s how quickly we can learn to govern it well. Teams that figure it out first will set the standards for everyone else.
A few years from now, autonomous remediation will seem as unremarkable as automatic software updates. The only variable is whether we spend those years building our agentic response capabilities or explaining why we waited.
